" This track is from a live radio broadcast I did with Mick Harvey on PBS Radio's "Studio 5 Live" program in Melbourne, Australia in 2005. Mick played lead guitar, Ruari Currin engineered it, and I recently took the liberty of overdubbing some background vocals I had in my head to fill it out a bit. I think it's a quite different sound and vocal approach than the original version on "Matter of Time", which was recorded literally weeks after I finished writing it; it's a good example of how you sometimes sing a song differently once you've gotten to know it better and have had a chance to try different things with it live. "

" Demon Alcohol is one of my many unreleased 'alt-country' songs - Mick Harvey released his own version of it on his CD One Man's Treasure in 2005. I thought it would be fun to let people hear what the original demo sounded like - the contrast between our versions really demonstrates Mick's remarkable skill and vision as an arranger. The original demo tape was really poor quality - a 4-track cassette from '93 or '94 when I wrote the song - so I took the opportunity to figure out my recording software and just demo it again; the minor-chord intro is a nod to the atmosphere of Mick's version, but the rest is pretty true to the original vibe."
